6.16.13

ThSorry I've been sort of MIA this past week. Between babysitting, moving, and preparing for a concerto competition life sort of got away from me. I do however have some fun things to share! (Excuse the poor picture quality as I am uploading from my phone lol)

So last weekend I was in Brehnam, TX for a friends wedding and I had some downtime to go shopping! I found these marquee letters at a local antique shop for about a dollar a piece! I decided to use them to spell out a quote about running (surprise, surprise) in my new apartment this fall. Since living in Boston is extremely expensive, I'm looking for cheap, creative ways to decorate.

The next thing I found was actually at the Michaels here in Waco. I've always wanted to decorate using fun, shabby chic frames but never actually bought any because you can spend over $100 getting enough of them for what I wanted to do. I came across these on sale at Michaels and only spent $13 for all of them (you can't tell here, but some of them are even two packs).

I've also come to the conclusion that you can never have too many Nike shorts ;)

They were on sale this week at Academy and I'm exited to say that I bought my very first pair of size smalls! A year ago at this time, my size large shorts were tight! Running has been so rewarding (despite the occasional injury lol) and I'm so excited to keep working so I can drop the last few pounds to my goal weight. I've lost a total of 17 pounds and went from a size 10/12 to a size 2/4. :)

Pause.

I'm a highly competitive person, especially with myself. I always want to train as hard as possible every time I go to the gym or go out for a run, so when I have an injury it is miserable. Not because of the pain, but because I have to hit pause on my training. Unfortunately, it makes me a grumpy person to not be able to run.

That's where I am this week. I am getting some tendonitis in my foot and have to take a couple weeks off from running. I noticed it a couple weeks ago but didn't think very much of it, but it started to escalate and in fear of it getting even worse, I have to stop. Fortunately I have a great workout buddy that is going to be cross-training with me at the gym for the next couple week! Never a bad time to start some weight training and good core workouts :) Hopefully after resting for a while I can slowly start to work my way back into some easy runs.

I think that since I'm flat footed, I need to find a pair of running shoes that has a more supportive arch than what I have now. I'm currently running in asics gel kayano 18's, which I have loved dearly but it's definitely time to start looking at some different options.

Boston.

The explosions at the 117th Boston Marathon are a devastating demonstration of the evil in this world. Despite living 1,900 miles from Boston, this horrific event hits home for me tonight, but not just because I am about to move to Boston. It is unfathomable to me because I cannot begin to understand the desire to destroy another human life. However, the people who created those explosive devices did not win today because they cannot suppress good in the world. They didn't win because despite this tragedy, the Boston Marathon will continue throughout the years and races all over the world will continue happening. We will still train, run and joyously cross finish lines celebrating all of the blessings we receive through our ability to run.

This event reminds me to reflect on my own journey as a runner, which up to this point has been relatively short so far. I began running a short 10 months ago without even being able to run a half mile, and now I have run an entire half marathon (a hilly one at that) without ever stopping to walk. I actually am going to start training for my first marathon in a few short weeks as well. I went from a size 10/12 to a size 2/4, and for the first time in my life, I am happy with how I look and feel. It may sound selfish, but running is something that I do entirely for myself. It was my way of healing from a bad breakup, and now running is part of my identity. It is part of how I want to define myself for the rest of my life.

In the face of fear and uncertainty, I am still going to go cheer people on as they cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon next year because good will always win.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you." - Isaiah 43:2

I am running 26.2 miles this week in remembrance of this tragedy.
